Managing the ASKAP Computing project: from inception to Early Science OperationsAuthors:
Guzman Juan C., Marquarding MalteThe Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) Computing project started in early 2008. The scope of the Computing project was (and still is) the development of the end-to-end observing system for the ASKAP telescope, including observation preparation, execution, (real-time) calibration and imaging, science data archiving. The ASKAP project is now in full commissioning mode with the start of Early Science operations “just around the corner”. Several of our ASKAP software packages have been in production but there are still several features to be completed. Our current software development approach is iterative, with several adapted best-practices from agile software engineering methods. This paper describes the ASKAP Computing management approach from software development processes to strategies on dealing with the changing project environment. It also shares some experiences on managing this type of complex software projects, how the project evolved over time and the challenges ahead.
